How to appear for International Music exams in India

Some people learn to play musical instruments for their hobby but some are seriously into it. Some learn it from the well known institute and some from private tutor. Those who are serious into music some of them appear for the exam and some are not. It’s the same case in learning with private tutor too. However, appearing in music exam not only provides you the Certificate but it checks you that how good you are into music. You can check your progress and have something to aim and focus for. Moreover, it brings discipline and right attitude about music which only brings positive result on your journey in music. So, those who are seriously looking music as their career should appear for exams. Now, how can you appear is what all about mentioned in this article. What is Music examination?

Music exams are the method of formally learning musical instruments by a student, it calls music grades. There is Initial to 8 grades in music. The Initial grade is very basic, and the 8th grade is the highest, after that one enters into higher study like Diploma courses in music.

There are two types of musical exams, Practical and Theory.

Practical exams are done with musical instruments preferred by the student like Guitar, Piano or Violin. It will ask you to play some music pieces, chords, scales, sight reading. Also, it will be checked out your musical knowledge and aural test by examiner.

Theory Exams is written exams where you will be provided a question paper in which you have to write about musical notation, its construction, scales and composition details as per the question asked.

The International music exam boards are available in India

There are four well known International music examination board available in India.

  1. Trinity College of London (TCL)
  2. Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM)
  3. London College of Music (LCM)
  4. Rockschool

Among them Trinity College of London is the oldest music board which started in 1877. All the Music boards has their representatives in all over in India, it has different exams centre in different cities where they conduct music examination. They all offer exam for different kind of musical instruments. You can appear as a private candidate too and for that you need to contact your nearest exam board representative.

How to contact International music exam board

If you are a self-learner, you need to check out through their websites, find the contact details of your nearest exam board and communicate with them. You may need to register your name with them and have to buy the syllabus and pay for the Exam fee.

If you are learning with the private tutor, you can take the guide from them. Most of the music teachers are registered with such music exams centre. If your music teacher is a registered teacher, you can appear through them. If your teacher is not registered with any of music exams center, take the guide from them, they will sure help it out.

On your exam day

Some examination board may have dress code please follow that. Carry your instrument and other accessories. If you have string instruments carry extra strings. Tune your instrument and hold it properly when entering to the exam room. If you are not respecting your instrument and hold it casually, be sure that your exams marks will be deducted. The examiner will make you feel enough comfort so that you don’t get nervous. So, don’t be stress and be positive.
